THE USSVI PURPOSE/CREED
To perpetuate the memory of our shipmates who gave their lives in the pursuit of duties while serving their country that their dedication, deeds and supreme sacrifice may be a constant source of motivation toward greater accomplishments, and to pledge loyalty and patriotism to the United States of America and its Constitution.

Adm. James B. Osborn Memorial Scholarship

The Admiral James B. Osborn Memorial Scholarship is named in honor of Rear Admiral James B. Osborn and is funded by the Charleston Base Submarine Veterans Inc. Admiral Osborn was selected to command our Navy's first ballistic missile launching submarine, the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON SSBN 598. Two years later, in July 1960, this submarine launched the first POLARIS missile from below the ocean surface off Cape Canaveral.

The scholarship will be awarded to a High School senior who demonstrates a familial relationship with a submarine qualified individual who is a member of United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. The applicant must show acceptance to a 2- or 4-year post-secondary institution. Applicants must demonstrate both scholastic proficiency and participation in extra-curricular activities that benefit either their school or community. The Scholarship will be disbursed as a one-time minimum $500 award payable to the recipient.

On Tuesday evening, June 9th, three scholarships were awarded by the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. Charleston Base. Checks were presented to the recipients by Julian Villegas, Rick Collins and Carl Chinn of the Scholarship Committee.

The Admiral James B. Osborn Memorial Scholarship is funded by the Charleston Base of USSVI. The scholarship will be awarded to a Tri-County high school senior and disbursed as a one-time minimum $500 award to the recipient.
