Adm. James B. Osborn Memorial Scholarship
The Admiral James B. Osborn Memorial Scholarship is named in
honor of Admiral James B. Osborn and is funded by the Charleston Base Submarine
Veterans Inc. Admiral Osborn was selected to command our Navy's first ballistic
missile launching submarine, the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON SSBN 598. Two years
later, in July 1960, this submarine launched the first POLARIS missile from
below the ocean surface off The scholarship will be awarded to a Tri-County high school
senior and disbursed as a one-time minimum $500 award payable to the recipient.
