Navy IDs Sailor, Says He = Was Pinned=20 By Rudder Ram

The=20 Navy today identified Machinist Mate 3rd Class Michael A. Gentile, = of=20 Fairfield, Maine, as the sailor who was killed in "an apparent = accident"=20 Saturday on board the ballistic missile submarine USS Nebraska as = it=20 operated near O'ahu.

The=20 Naval Safety Center reported that Gentile died after becoming = entangled=20 and pinned in the rudder ram aboard the Nebraska during = cleaning.

Gentile, 21, = joined the=20 Navy in July of 2005. He had been assigned to the Nebraska since = Nov. 15,=20 2006. Gentile had previously served on USS Alaska.

Gentile was = part of the=20 "blue crew" on the Nebraska, which has two crews that take turns = manning=20 the submarine.

"Our=20 sincerest condolences and prayers continue to go out to the family = and=20 friends of Petty Officer Gentile," the Navy said in a release. = Memorial=20 service plans are pending.

Investigation Ongoing In = Death Of USS=20 Nebraska Sailor

(KITSAP SUN 23 = SEP=20 08)

BANGOR - The = Navy=20 identified the sailor killed in an apparent accident aboard a = Naval Base=20 Kitsap Bangor-based submarine as Machinist Mate 3rd Class Michael = A.=20 Gentile of Fairfield, Maine.

Gentile, 21, = died=20 Saturday while the ballistic submarine USS Nebraska was conducting = routine=20 operations off of Oahu, Hawaii, according to Submarine Group = Trident. The=20 accident was originally reported by the Navy on Sunday night. Per = Navy=20 policy, the sailor's name wasn't released until 24 hours after = next of kin=20 had been notified.

Details of the = incident=20 are not available because an investigation is ongoing, according = to the=20 press release.

Gentile joined = the Navy=20 in July 2005. He had been assigned to the USS Nebraska's Blue Crew = since=20 Nov. 15, 2006. He had previously served on the USS Alaska, also = based at=20 Bangor.

The=20 sub was beneath the surface at the time of the accident, said = Submarine=20 Group Trident spokesman Lt. Kyle Raines. Gentile was given = emergency=20 medical treatment on board the sub and was placed on a medical = helicopter,=20 but he died before reaching The Queen's Medical Center in = Hawaii.

The=20 submarine pulled into port in Pearl Harbor on Monday where an=20 investigation began and crew members met with counselors.

Raines says = there was no=20 indication that a mechanical problem or malfunction was involved, = nor was=20 anyone else injured.

The=20 USS Nebraska is one of 14 Ohio-class submarines that can carry up = to 24=20 Trident ballistic missiles.

Submarine On Show In=20 Falmouth

At=20 the heart of the Maritime Museum=92s Under the Sea exhibition, is = the=20 Drebbel, a replica of the very first submarine designed in the = 1620s,=20 which recently received a very special visit.

Henrietta van = Kuffeler=20 travelled all the way from The Hague in Holland to see the = submarine and=20 visit the Museum, accompanied by her stepson Christiaan, and his = son=20 Philip, who are descendents of the van Kuffeler=92s who closely = assisted the=20 inventor Cornelius Drebbel in his exploits.

The=20 Drebbel is a marvel of what was then hugely advanced technology. A = reconstruction was completed in 2001 for the BBC programme = 'Building the=20 Impossible' and closely followed the techniques, materials and = methods=20 originally developed by the Dutch inventor Drebbel. Our special = guests=20 bridged a nine generation gap of the marriage of Drebbel=92s two = daughters=20 to the van Kuffelers.

Christiaan van = Kuffeler=20 said: 'It is fascinating to see the actual working results of=20 technological development at an embryonic stage, in the 17th = century,=20 which now forms the basis of the country's modern defence = capabilities.=20 The museum is to be congratulated on such an excellent educational = display'.

The=20 Drebbel is an amazing feat of engineering, made from wood, = originally=20 rowed by a crew of 12, using oars with folding leather blades. = When=20 submerged, the air was purified by salt peter, and the vessel = remained=20 under the surface of the Thames for two hours. Today's scaled down = replica=20 has only half an hours breathable air in the hull before carbon = dioxide=20 levels become dangerous. With no windows to see where they were = going, the=20 rowers navigated by means of a compass, and a large rudder for=20 steering.

First = Drebbel=20 Submarine

The=20 first serious discussion of a "submarine" (a craft designed to be=20 navigated underwater) appeared in 1578 from the pen of William = Bourne, a=20 British mathematician and writer on naval subjects. Bourne = proposed a=20 completely enclosed boat that could be submerged and rowed = underwater. It=20 consisted of a wooden frame covered with waterproof leather; it = was to be=20 submerged by reducing its volume by contracting the sides through = the use=20 of hand vises. Bourne did not actually construct his boat, and = Cornelis=20 Drebbel (or Cornelius van Drebbel), a Dutch inventor, is usually = credited=20 with building the first submarine.

Between 1620 = and 1624 he=20 successfully manoeuvred his craft at depths of from 12 to 15 feet = (four to=20 five meters) beneath the surface during repeated trials in the = Thames=20 River, in England. Van Drebbel=92s submarine was powered by = oarsmen, the=20 oars protruding through flexible leather seals. Snorkel air tubes = were=20 held above the surface by floats, thus permitting a submergence = time of=20 several hours.

Van=20 Drebbel followed his first boat with two others. The later models = were=20 larger but they relied upon the same principles. It is reported = that after=20 repeated tests, King James I of England rode in one of his later = models to=20 demonstrate its safety. But even royal favour failed to arouse the = interest of the British Navy. It was an age when the possibility = of=20 submarine warfare was still far in the future.

Drebbel's = submarine=20 resembled that proposed by Bourne in that its outer hull consisted = of=20 greased leather over a wooden frame; oars extended through the = sides and,=20 sealed with tight-fitting leather flaps, provided a means of = propulsion=20 both on the surface and underwater.

It=20 is also said that Van Drebbel developed a chemical which purified = the air=20 and allowed the crew to stay submerged for extended periods.

Rumor has it = that=20 there is a new game being played at one of the tables at The After = Battery.

Like all = good sailors=20 who frequent the YMCA and the Christian Science Reading Room, some = of=20 those who attend the Wednesday Socials have taken up an old = children=92s=20 game of Jacks.  So = there is=20 now competition with the Tiddlywinks and Pick-Up-Sticks = players.  Looks like Old Maid is = hanging by=20 a thread with all this new activity.

Special = thanks goes to=20 Richard Cleeve for re-introducing this exciting activity to our = Wednesday=20 socials!

Russia Successfully Test = Fired The=20 =94Bulava=94

Barents = Observer,=20 September 19, 2008

The=20 Russian Navy yesterday successfully test fired a =94Bulava-M=94 = missile from a=20 submarine in the Barents Sea. Navy officials now confirm that the = missile=20 next year will be installed at the country=92s first = fourth-generation=20 submarine, the =93Yuri Dolgorukii=94.

Meanwhile, Navy = officials=20 say that the =93Yuri Dolgorukii=94, a 955 =93Borey=94 class = vessel, is undergoing=20 test sailing outside Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast.

The=20 launch made from the =93Dmitrii Donskoy=94, the Navy=92s recently = modernized=20 Typhoon submarine, took place in the Barents Sea. The missile = successfully=20 hit its target at Kamchatka.

The=20 successful launch allows me to say with big certainty that the = complex=20 will be applied in the Armed Forces, a high-ranking military = official told=20 RIA Novosti. However, more test launches will be necessary, also = from the=20 =93Yuri Dolgorukii=94, he adds.

The=20 =93Bulava=94 missile has previously undergone seven test launches, = of which=20 the last three have been unsuccessful. The missile=92s application = in the=20 Armed Forces has several times been postponed.

The=20 new =93Yuri Dolgorukii=94 will together with the =93Bulava-M=94 = missile, be=20 Russia=92s state of the art military hardware. The vessel has an = estimated=20 price tag of 23 billion RUB (600 million EUR).

Russian Navy To Adopt New = Bulava=20 Ballistic Missile In 2009

RIA=20 Novosti, September 19, 2008

MOSCOW =96 = Russia will=20 adopt new Bulava-M submarine-based ballistic missiles for service = with the=20 Navy and commission the first Borey-class strategic nuclear = submarine in=20 2009, a senior Navy official said on Friday.

The=20 Navy on Thursday conducted a scheduled launch of the Bulava = missile from=20 the submerged Dmitry Donskoi, a Typhoon-class ballistic missile = nuclear=20 submarine, in northern Russia's White Sea, and the missile reached = its=20 target at the Kura testing grounds on the Kamchatka Peninsula, = about 6,700=20 kilometers (4,200 miles) east of Moscow.

"The=20 successful launch of the ballistic missile allows us to assert = with=20 certainty that both the Bulava missile and the Yury Dolgoruky = submarine=20 will be put into service in 2009," the official said.

The=20 Bulava (SS-NX-30), developed by the Moscow Institute of Thermal=20 Technology, is designed for deployment on Borey-class Project 955=20 nuclear-powered submarines.

The=20 first submarine in the series, the Yury Dolgoruky, was built at = the=20 Sevmash plant in the northern Arkhangelsk Region and is currently=20 undergoing sea trials.

The=20 submarine has a length of 170 meters (580 feet), a body diameter = of around=20 13 meters (42 feet), and a submerged speed of about 29 knots.

It=20 will be equipped with 16 Bulava ballistic missiles, each carrying = up to 10=20 nuclear warheads and having a range of 8,000 kilometers (5,000 = miles).=20

Two=20 other Borey-class nuclear submarines, the Alexander Nevsky and the = Vladimir Monomakh, are currently under construction at the Sevmash = plant.=20

Fourth-generation=20 Borey-class nuclear-powered submarines armed with Bulava missiles = will=20 form the core of Russia's fleet of modern strategic submarines. =

Russia plans to = build at=20 least seven $890-million submarines of this class by 2015.

Navy Shows Off Unmanned=20 Submarine-Detecting Craft

The = Remote-Controlled=20 Boats Are Designed To Detect Quiet-Diesel Submarines. Officials = Say The=20 Vessels Will Be Useful In The Persian Gulf. They Are Expected To = Be=20 Deployed In 2011.

SAN=20 DIEGO =96 To the world it might be called a robot boat, but its = proper name=20 is the Unmanned Surface Vehicle, and the U.S. Navy expects it to = be a=20 major tool in countering what officials believe is a growing = threat posed=20 by quiet diesel-powered submarines owned by rogue nations.

In=20 advance of the official roll-out today, reporters were allowed to = see the=20 boat on Thursday at Naval Base Point Loma before it took a trial = run on=20 San Diego Bay.

The=20 goal is to greatly expand the Navy's ability to detect hostile = submarines=20 by sending the unmanned boats, equipped with sonar, to probe the = nooks and=20 crannies where subs might be hiding to ambush a Navy ship or a = merchant=20 vessel.

The=20 boats will be controlled by sailors at a safe distance on a much = larger=20 ship.

The=20 Navy wants to have 32 of the unmanned boats, each packed with the=20 most-sophisticated electronic gear available.

The=20 first of the two boats, developed and stuffed with sonar-detection = gear,=20 cost $197 million.

In=20 the future, the price is slated to drop to $46 million per = boat.

Each=20 aluminum-hulled boat is 39 feet long, weighs 17,000 pounds and can = carry=20 up to 5,000 pounds of intelligence-gathering technology while = traveling up=20 to 35 knots in rough waters.

If=20 all goes as planned, the first will be deployed in 2011, possibly = to the=20 Persian Gulf, where the Iranian navy says its submarines, lurking=20 undetected, could close the Strait of Hormuz, through which = tankers=20 carrying much of the world's oil supply travel.

The=20 boats are meant to be launched by the so-called Littoral Combat = Ships,=20 shallow-draft ships that can maneuver close to shore.

"With the way = the world=20 is now, with terrorists just sitting around looking for new ideas = to=20 attack us, it's very important we have a way to protect our = sailors as=20 they transit through the shallow waters," said Thomas Mulkeen, one = of the=20 contractors working on the project, whose motto is "Detect, deter, = defeat."

San=20 Diego will be the home port for six of the Littoral Combat Ships. = The=20 Space and Naval Warfare Command Systems Center, San Diego, has = been a=20 leader in developing the submarine detection technology for the = unmanned=20 boats.

"We're still = in the early=20 stages of the concept," said Capt. Mike Good, program manager.
